Default Really, Really, Bad Brakedust tips anyone?

One of the cars I'm working on in a few weeks needs a job done on the wheels but there's no way I'm going to get both the wheels and the paint done in a single day. I might persuade the owner to leave it for a second day but the wheels are so bad I don't know if its going to be worth it.

The brakedust is really baked in at the back of the wheels and I know that regular wheel cleaner isn't going to move it, regardless of concentration. Now previously, I've tried some crazy combinations to re-juve including heavy polishes and even steel-wool - well the wheels were fecked anyway TBH.

Anybody try anything that is less aggressive but effective? What about chemicals, thinners, solvents, etc? I know its dangerous territory... PM if you have any "trade secrets" for me!!

I find g101 gets even the worst wheels clean for me, some times a little shot of tardis is needed to remove some of the heavier soiled areas!

Ah no... I'm talking about serious old, baked in brakedust...

There is a lot of scope for wheel reconditioning products.... Wheel wax is a relatively new concept, but I thing a good wheel detailing system is long overdue. I think I will look into that properly next year.

THANKS BARRY SCOTT

I thought by putting it in big writting it would give the impression of that igiot shouting down my TV speakers!

I had a really bad problem with brake dust on the wheels of my M3 after a trackday once. Basically, i did the trackday, and afterwards, the wheels were black with brake dust.

The car then got parked up in the shed for 3 or 4 months, with caked on red hot brake dust (was flat out busy and didn't get a chance to clean her!)

When i eventually got around to cleaning them, the brake dust had started to rust and everything on me!!! (harsh braking from track i presume was shaving metal from my discs on the track day possibly)

Tried to wash as normal but didn't even make the slightest impression on them. So i got my normal Chemical Guys wheel cleaner, sprayed it on that evening, and left overnight, really soaked it into them. Its a good clingy cleaner so doesn't run off like some other cleaners. Then the following morning, i gave them another good soaking. Left them there then for the morning, and then at lunch time, soaked them a 3rd time, and got my wheel brush at them, and the dirt fell off them. A quick power wash and job done

A few layers of Jetseal on them before the next trackday did wonders for cleaning them afterwards. I thought the break dust would just eat through the sealant, but it wiped off very easily afterwards.

Cillit bang got shock absorber oil off a wheel that was sitting there for about two months.
I wouldn't use it too often though.
